Fishing at Bewl Water - A Beginner's Guide

Everything you need to know about fishing at one of the South East's premier stillwater fisheries.

5 April 2026

If you have never cast a line before, Bewl Water is one of the easiest places in the South East to start. At 800 acres it is the largest reservoir in the region and one of the finest stillwater fisheries in the country, with healthy fish, plenty of room, and a team on hand who are happy to point beginners in the right direction. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first visit.

Why start at Bewl Water

A big, well-managed water takes a lot of the guesswork out of learning. The reservoir is stocked regularly, the banks are accessible, and there is space to find a quiet spot and practise without feeling crowded. Whether you fish from the bank or take a boat out, you can build your confidence at your own pace.

Trout fishing

Trout is where most people begin. We stock the reservoir regularly with healthy rainbow trout, and you can fish from a boat, from the bank, or buy a season ticket if you plan to come back often. The trout season runs from 18 March 2026 to 14 February 2027. If you are completely new, bank fishing is the simplest way to start. Read our full trout fishing guide for the details.

Predator fishing

Through the colder months, from October to February, the reservoir turns to pike and perch. Predator fishing is done with lures or plugs from a boat or the bank, by reservation, and we always appreciate catch returns so we can keep the fishery healthy. It is a different challenge to trout and well worth trying once you have found your feet.

Fancy something different? Kayak fishing

If you already own a purpose-built fishing kayak, you can explore the hidden corners of the reservoir that the boats and banks cannot easily reach. Trout and predator kayak tickets are available from 18 March 2026 to 14 February 2027. Have a read of the kayak fishing rules before you book.

Never fished before? Book a lesson

The quickest way to learn is with someone who knows the water. Our qualified instructors run half-day tuition sessions for ages 12 and over, and all the kit is included if you do not have your own. You will cover casting, watercraft, and how to read the conditions, so you leave able to fish on your own.

Day tickets, permits and the tackle shop

You do not need to bring anything to get started. The tackle shop opens at 7am most days and sells flies, lures, permits and day tickets, and the staff are glad to recommend what is working. If you want to know what the fish are taking that week, our fishing reports are updated regularly with conditions, catch rates, recommended flies and lures, and the best spots on the reservoir.

Before you arrive

Give yourself plenty of time, dress for the weather, and arrive early if you want first pick of the banks. The tackle shop team can sort your permit and point you to a good starting spot. For directions and parking, see plan your visit.
