Walking trails at Bewl Water

Take a Hike

Walking & Trails

13 miles of trail around the reservoir. Through ancient woodland, along the water’s edge, and across open meadow, with views that change with the seasons.

Plan Your Walk

Printed trail maps are available from the Waterfront Café. Some sections may close November until April when ground conditions are wet, so it’s worth checking before a longer route.

Dog walking

Well-behaved dogs are welcome off-lead across most of the site. Dogs cannot enter the Nature Reserve, the children's playground, or the reservoir itself. There's a self-service dog wash with warm water, shampoo, and a dryer at the Waterfront Café, plus treats and a water station inside.

Horse riding routes

Equestrian trails are open 1 April to 30 October on quieter midweek paths. Horsebox parking is provided at a £10 day charge. Email the team in advance so we can let you know which routes are open.

Sponsored walks

We host charity walks year-round. If you'd like to organise one, get in touch and we'll talk you through routes and group logistics.

Choose your route

№ 01

The Full Circuit

13 miles5–6 hoursModerate

The complete loop around the reservoir. Through ancient woodland, across open meadow, and along quiet coves with panoramic views at every turn. Pack a lunch and make a day of it.

№ 02

Bewlbridge Loop

3 miles1–1.5 hoursEasy

A gentle loop starting from the main car park, following the shoreline and returning through woodland. Perfect for families and a quick leg-stretch.

№ 03

Woodland & Water Trail

5 miles2–2.5 hoursEasy–Moderate

The best of both worlds, half the route follows the water's edge, the other half winds through ancient woodland. Great for wildlife spotting.

№ 04

Southern Ridge Walk

7 miles3–3.5 hoursModerate

Follow the southern shore for elevated views across the reservoir, dropping down to quiet bays before climbing back through the trees. The most scenic half-day option.

Before You Go

Footwear

Sturdy walking shoes or boots recommended. Trails can be muddy after rain, especially through woodland sections.

Best Times

Early morning for wildlife. Golden hour for photography. Autumn for colour. Winter for solitude.

Terrain

Generally rolling with some steeper sections. The trail is well-maintained but not fully surfaced, expect natural ground, tree roots, and the occasional stile.

Accessibility

The section from the main car park to the Waterfront Café is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Other sections include uneven terrain and steps.

Every season brings something new

Happiest outdoors

Bluebells in spring, wildflowers in summer, colour in autumn, frosty solitude in winter.
