A Guide to Walking the Bewl Water Reservoir Trail
Discover the 13-mile trail circling Bewl Water - from gentle lakeside strolls to the full circuit challenge.
A single path wraps the whole way around our reservoir, and walking it is one of the best ways to experience Bewl Water. The full loop is 13 miles through ancient woodland, open meadow, and quiet coves, but you do not have to do all of it. There are shorter routes for every pace, and the views change with every season.
The full circuit
The complete loop is 13 miles and takes most people five to six hours at a steady pace. It is graded moderate, with rolling ground and a few steeper sections, and it rewards you with panoramic views at almost every turn. Pack a lunch, take your time, and make a day of it.
Shorter loops
If the full circuit is more than you fancy, three shorter routes give you a taste of the best of it:
- Bewlbridge Loop: 3 miles, easy, around 1 to 1.5 hours. A gentle shoreline-and-woodland loop from the main car park, ideal for families.
- Woodland & Water Trail: 5 miles, easy to moderate. Half along the water’s edge, half through ancient woodland, and great for spotting wildlife.
- Southern Ridge Walk: 7 miles, moderate. Elevated views along the southern shore before dropping to quiet bays, our most scenic half-day option.
Walking with dogs
Well-behaved dogs are welcome off-lead across most of the site. To protect the wildlife, dogs cannot enter the Nature Reserve, the children’s playground, or the reservoir itself. There is a self-service dog wash with warm water, shampoo and a dryer at the Waterfront Café, plus treats and a water station inside.
Accessibility and terrain
The section from the main car park to the Waterfront Café is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Beyond that, the trail is well-maintained but not fully surfaced, so expect natural ground, tree roots, and the occasional stile. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended, as woodland sections can be muddy after rain, and some stretches may close from November to April when the ground is wet. It is worth checking conditions before a longer route.
Horse riding
Equestrian trails are open from 1 April to 30 October on quieter midweek paths. Horsebox parking is available for a £10 day charge. Email us in advance so we can let you know which routes are open.
The best times to go
Come early in the morning for wildlife, and stay for golden hour if you have a camera. Spring brings bluebells, summer the wildflowers, autumn the colour, and winter a frosty solitude that is hard to beat. Pair your walk with our nature and wildlife guide to know what to look for.
Before you set off
Printed trail maps are available from the Waterfront Café, and you can see every route on our walking and trails page. Sort your parking before you arrive, pack water and a layer for the weather, and enjoy the walk.
