BSA August Update

With the summer upon us, let’s make the most of the long sunny days to go sailing!

  • Barts Bash – Sunday 16th September

A global sailing race taking place in 600 venues in 80 countries, this is ‘The Largest Sailing Race in the World’.

BSA is joining in the fun and invites local sailors and visitors to take part in a single handicap race which will last about one hour. The briefing is at 10:15 and there will be lots of prizes. A barbecue will be available after racing.

Bart’s Bash gives the sailing community an opportunity to remember Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, a double Olympic medallist who tragically lost his life whilst training for the America’s Cup in 2013, and The Andrew Simpson Foundation (ASF) uses this event for charitable fundraising.

  • Wanderer Inland Championship – Saturday & Sunday 15th & 16th September

After last year’s successful event, BSA is looking forward to hosting the Wanderer Inlands again this year, in conjunction with the Catapult Open Meeting and Bart’s Bash.

  • Catapult Open Meeting – Saturday & Sunday 15th & 16th September

BSA is pleased to welcome the Catapults back to Bewl after a three-year absence. The Open will be a two-day event, shared with the Wanderers and incorporating Bart’s Bash on the Sunday.

  • Youth Sailing

Emma Crane, a successful Laser Radial racer and qualified instructor, is aiming to run some youth coaching sessions from September onwards.  If you would like to take part, please email Emma to join her contact list.

  • Optimists

The Bewl Barbarians can be seen regularly at Bewl, undergoing coaching in groups of beginners, intermediates and South-East Racers. They continue to do well at Optimist open meetings and the Inlands, and we wish them success in the Nationals at Pwllheli.

  • Mariners of Bewl

Mariners of Bewl hosted their very successful ‘Fun day on the water’ for the Duchenne Family Support Group on 21st July this year. Thanks to the loan of the superb V20 by the Wheelyboat Trust, the children were able to get afloat in their wheelchairs and enjoy the wind blasting through their hair.

  • Windsurfing

Please put 20th October 2018 in your diaries for the London Windsurfing Association Summer Series Event 7 at Bewl.

  • Push the Boat Out – Saturday 19th May

Conditions at Bewl Water were perfect for Push The Boat Out and around 180 visitors enjoyed a trial sail. One of them summed up the day thus: “Thank you so much to all the friendly volunteers today at this event. My two sons had an absolute blast, trying the Oppies, Wanderers and Wayfarers. .  . . Ben is absolutely buzzing about his go at helming the Laser”.

  • 2000 Southern Travellers Round 5 – Saturday 7th July

Despite the light flukey wind, the four visiting boats enjoyed sailing on our great expanse of water. The event was won by Richard and Ian Hudson from Bough Beech.

  • Facebook Group

We have set up a ‘closed’ Facebook group to enable club members to contact each other for helm / crew availability and general advice and chat. Only members of the Facebook group can see the posts to the group, hence the ‘closed’ status but the group is up and running…

To join the group, go to the main BSA Facebook page and click on the Groups link then on ‘Bewl Sailing Members’.

Sailors and spectators can enjoy drinks and snacks in the Pop-Up Café at all these events.

For more information, visit our website or, if you’d like to chat to someone in person, please call 07951 258816 or 07766 994728.

Looking forward to seeing you at Bewl Water soon.
