Top 10 Tips for Open Water Swimming at Bewl Water, Kent

With its stunning scenery, tranquil waters, and professional facilities, Bewl Water is one of the South East’s most scenic spots for open water swimming. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or trying it for the first time, here are our top 10 tips to help you make the most of your experience.

Book in Advance

All swimmers must pre-book onto an official Open Water Swimming session. These take place every Saturday from 9:00–10:30 and 17:00–18:30.

Arrive Early for the Safety Briefing

A short safety induction is mandatory before entering the water. Arrive at least 10 minutes before your session to check in and attend the briefing led by our experienced team of lifeguards.

Wear a Tow-Float and Bright Swim Cap

For your safety, all swimmers must wear a tow-float and a brightly coloured swim hat. These help lifeguards maintain visibility across the water and ensure you can be easily seen by others.

Wetsuits Are Recommended

Wetsuits are compulsory when the water temperature is below 16°C, but we recommend wearing one year-round for added warmth and buoyancy in the water.

Don’t Swim Alone

While all sessions are supervised, swimming near others is strongly advised. It enhances safety and makes the experience more enjoyable—especially for newcomers to open water.

Learn to Sight

Open water swimming means no pool walls or lanes. To stay on course, practise ‘sighting’—raising your head occasionally to orient yourself and ensure you’re heading in the right direction.

Check the Weather

Conditions at Bewl can vary with the weather. Before attending, check the forecast and dress accordingly. Wind and rain can make swimming more challenging, so be prepared.

Bring the Right Gear

Aside from your swimming essentials, bring warm layers for after your swim, a towel, flip-flops, and some water or snacks. Hot drinks and food are also available on-site.

Parking is Included

Parking is free for open water swimmers during their session—just register your vehicle when booking. Use the Water Sports Car Park for the easiest access to the launch point.

Respect the Environment
