BEWL WATER TROUT FISHERY 2011

Bewl's 2011 season has been fantastic with plenty of overwintered Rainbows and some spectacular home-reared Blue trout. Rod averages have stayed high throughout and water temperatures have not climbed above 20degC even in the middle of summer and are now falling.  By the end of August over 30000 Rainbows had been stocked plus around 10000 Blues and 500 Browns with plenty more stock to come from our own fish farm.
At the beginning of September a batch of 150 large Blues up to 6lbs plus will be stocked including the 5lbs 9ozs beauty pictured below.

From early July home-reared Brownies have been stocked following the re-opening of Bewl's own Brown Trout hatchery and rearing farm.

BEWL WATER is one of England’s finest and most attractive trout fisheries with boat fishing on much of Bewl’s 770 acres from the fleet of 54 well-maintained boats, and bank fishing accessible on more than half of the lake’s 17-mile shoreline. Bewl's beautiful Wealden surroundings and intricate shape appeal both to those who like the intimacy of secluded and sheltered bays, and to those who appreciate the huge expanses and panoramic views experienced only on the larger stillwater fisheries.

A good water for fish to overwinter, Bewl often produces superb double figure fish like this 11lbs 4ozs rainbow caught in 2010 by Bernie Fairbrother.

2010's Largest Fish

BEWL WATER is famed for its quality home-grown Rainbows which are trickle stocked into the lake throughout the season and these are being supplemented in 2011 with some superb 2lb plus Rainbows bought in for the early weeks from from the West Country.  This season, starting in February, we have been introducing fierce-fighting Blue trout many of which are around 3lbs and more.  3,000 of these went in before the season started and over 7,000 more will go over the next months.

These Blue trout, easily distinguished from normal rainbows by their bright silver underside and often striking blue topside, are noted for their hard fighting qualities which are attributable to their denser muscle tissue.

Flyfishing is a peaceful sport, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life – and you can keep your catch so, with luck, you may take supper home!  The lake is stocked with superb quality home-reared trout which, when caught, often weigh over two pounds and sometimes are much heavier. The fishery record for Rainbow trout is 18lbs 10ozs and for Brown trout is 14lbs 10ozs.

All are welcome at the Fishing Lodge where friendly staff will give you information and advice, and newcomers will receive all the assistance they need. The Lodge stocks a wide range of flies and tackle, waterproof clothing and wellies, and is open 7 days per week from 0830hrs to 1800hrs during the season which starts on 21st March.
