Pike Fly Fishing at Bewl Water

With immediate effect fly fishing for Pike will be allowed at Bewl Water following an approach by Andy Lush of the Friendly Fisherman to fishery owner Simon Hume-Kendall.

"I'm very pleased that the new regime at Bewl are so pro-active towards pike and pike fisherman at the reservoir," said Andy.

2010 will be a trial period to make sure there are no unforeseen problems and, as the pike's welfare has to be taken into consideration, pike fly fishing will not been allowed at times when trout 'Catch & Release' has been suspended due to high water temperatures (above 20degC). Check web site for details.

How much will it cost?
The purchase of a Pike Fly Permit for just £17 will enable you to fish for pike on the fly  from either from the boat or bank. Boat hire prices are currently on special offer at £15 for one or £25 for two anglers. See website for details.

What tackle to use?
The following items will make the experience both enjoyable for yourself and safe for the pike - here are Andy's suggestions for those wishing to try this form of fishing:

• Rod: 9' #10/11
• Reel: Any suitable reel to accommodate #10/11 line plus backing
• Line: 5 - 7' Saltwater 'Seaguar' Fluorocarbon 25lb with 8" 20 - 30lb wire tippet and a snap clip to change flies
• Flies: Large enough and strong enough to hold 20lb plus fish! Special pike flies are now commercially available
• Net: 36"/42" Specimen style or Salmon Gye net
• Tools: Un-hooking Glove, 9" Forceps or Long Nose Pliers and Hook Cutters
• Mat: Un-hooking mat for floor of boat
